NEW! Immersion Handbook for Language and Culture Camps

We have just released Culture Camps for Language Learning: an Immersion Handbook, a new resource to help First Nations communities plan and carry out language and culture immersion camps.

"I think this handbook demonstrates a new approach to language and culture immersion camps,” said Dr. Lorna Williams, Chair of the Board at the First Peoples’ Council. "It puts the focus squarely on learning the language through participating in traditional activities on the land so camp goers will always connect the two.”

Language Immersion Handbook

We are happy to present our newest resource: the Language and Culture Immersion Programs Handbook.

The Language Program was able to create this useful resource for B.C. First Nations communities involved in the language revitalization process with support and funding from the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation (MARR) and the New Relationship Trust (NRT).

The handbook includes tips for language teaching and learning, ideas for language immersion games and activities, as well as suggested language teaching methods and approaches. It is intended to be a practical tool for Elders, community members, teachers and anyone else involved in language revitalization, especially language and culture immersion programs.

The information in this handbook was compiled from information provided to the First Peoples’ Council in the Language and Culture Immersion Camp Program final reports from 2007-2009, as well as from our own research and experiences.

The handbook was created by Xway’waat (Deanna Daniels), Language Program Coordinator and Hannah Amrhein, M.A. Applied Linguistics. For more information please contact Xway’waat (Deanna Daniels) deanna@fphlcc.ca

Language Nest Programs in B.C. (booklet)

Onowa McIvor is of Swampy Cree and Scottish Canadian heritage. She is currently working on her Ph.d at the School of Language and Literacy Education at UBC.

This booklet was created out of Onowa's thesis work on language nests in B.C. She worked alongside two First Nations' communities who shared the wealth of their knowledge and experience with her and vetted her work all along the way. This plain-language booklet is a condensed version of the findings of her thesis. It was created with the hope that it may be useful to communities interested in starting a language nest program.
